Our highly successful Multi Trades and Heavy Industry program recently made the shortlist for the 2020 Australia Training Awards in the Industry Collaboration category. The Australian Training Awards are the peak national awards for the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, recognising individuals, businesses and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) for their contribution to skilling Australia.
The Heavy Industry and Trades – Multi Skills (HIT) program was developed by RDAYMN and local employers to provide job seekers with the skills needed to gain employment in sectors where there is strong industry demand for workers. The program provided 20 weeks of intensive skills and personal development training to job seekers and provides an environment for them to become work ready for employment in the heavy engineering industry.
The judging panel was impressed by the outstanding features of this program including the simulated work nature of the training program, the diverse and committed Industry Advisory Group established to guide and support the program, and the work readiness of the participants. This collaboration highlights the success that comes from the commitment of collaborating partners and the VET system.
The project was set up in response to heavy industry in Port Pirie experiencing difficulties in recruiting work ready employees whilst at the same time providing opportunities for the unemployed to experience, if they choose, a new life changing career opportunity. It is funded through the Australian Governments Regional Employment Trials Program as the result of a successful application from RDAYMN into the fund.
The final stage of judging has now been completed, and unfortunately RDAYMN and its partners, have not been selected as the South Australian representative in the Industry Collaboration category. We would like to thank everyone who was able to create such a wonderful program that has led to 27 of 32 participants gaining employment. It’s programs like this that enable us to strengthen our workforce with people with the right skills to get the job done.
