With an unused cottage on their farm, Jill and Gordon wondered whether it could do anything other than require maintenance.

They decided that it was time the cottage pulled its weight, and so they approached the Regional Development Board. ‘We went to get advice on how to turn the cottage into self-contained accommodation – what hoops we needed to jump through and business guidance. The staff made it so much easier’.

A few years down the track and Jill is now actively involved in the local tourism operator group, the Southern Flinders Tourism and Tastes Association. Jill’s passion for tourism in the Southern Flinders Ranges is obvious, which is why she is so well regarded in her role as the group’s Publicity Officer.

The cottage venture proved successful, and after seeing more and more of their guests arriving with bikes on the back of their cars, Jill and Gordon applied for a grant to build a cycling and walking trail on their property. ‘Without the help, encouragement and support from the Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority and Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North, we would not have been able to build the really good cycle and walking trails we have on our property’.

Many farming properties in the region are realising the value of tourism, and converting their extra accommodation into businesses to provide much needed extra income. Jill and Gordon wouldn’t have it any other way!
