The Delicious Southern Flinders Ranges
A new guide for the Southern Flinders Ranges aims to raise the profile of the great food and wine experiences available in the region.
Media Release, Wednesday 16 February 2011
‘The Delicious Southern Flinders Ranges’ is a booklet that features 20 of the food and wine outlets in the area. ‘Many people, even locals, don’t realise the fantastic produce available in the Southern Flinders Ranges’ said Stephen Schwer, Tourism Development Officer with the Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority. ‘There are certified organic and biodynamic fruit and vegetable producers, specialist meats such as kangaroo, lamb and seafood suppliers, cafes, pubs and our wineries continue to win medals. Traditionally Shiraz has been the most popular varietal, however our vignerons and winemakers are now also producing excellent Italian varietals such as Nebbiolo, Temperanillo and Sangiovese.’
‘We were very lucky to have Lisa Pearson from Pure Outback Consulting as the project manager for the brochure’ Mr. Schwer said. ‘Lisa understood exactly what we wanted to achieve from the outset and has developed a stylish brochure that is perfect for our target market’.
‘The brochure has been 10 months in the making’ Ms. Pearson noted. ‘The A5 brochure is a must have glove box guide to the region’s producers markets, wineries, cellar doors, farm gate sales, regional produce outlets and dining experiences. Our food producers and wineries are gaining solid recognition for the quality of their products’.
One of the businesses featured in the guide is Dew’s Meats of Orroroo. A supplier of kangaroo meat to the Red Ochre Restaurant, as well as having national distribution to butchers, restaurants, hotels, meat wholesalers and supermarkets, this business is a stand out in the Southern Flinders Ranges. Director Taryn Ackland believes in promoting their products whenever possible. ‘This brochure is a professional, well presented way of promoting our products’. Ms. Ackland is excited about the future of food and wine production in the Southern Flinders Ranges. ‘I believe that because of the diversity there are many avenues of growth for food and wine in the region. This region is very diverse which lends itself to many opportunities’.
The brochure is being launched both in Adelaide and the Southern Flinders Ranges. On Friday (18 February 2011), a contingent of producers and tourism employees will present a private tasting for the staff at the South Australian Tourism Commission head office in King William Street. Then on Sunday (20 February 2011) a public launch will be held at the Wirrabara Producers Market. ‘We welcome the world to our palette’. Mrs. O’Reilly said. ‘Anne Jones, the Morning Presenter from ABC North and West will be coming along at 10:00 a.m. to launch the new food and wine guide. Anne will also be giving a short presentation on the value of food tourism’.
Vigneron and Cellar Door Owner Margo Blesing from Blesings Garden Wines is a keen participant in the brochure. ‘The guide will inform the audience about the Southern Flinders Ranges and emphasise what differentiates our product and destination from others’ Ms. Blesing commented. ‘We need to create awareness of the range, quality and diversity this area can offer. Visitors can be inspired by fresh, natural produce, experienced in stunning locations and have fabulous wines and food served by friendly and interesting people’.
The brochure will be distributed around the region and the state through visitor information centres businesses.
